Police fear local met with foul play

Police now believe foul play is involved in the mysterious disappearance of a young Nanaimo woman on the Canada Day weekend.

Twenty-one-year-old Lisa Young was last seen leaving a downtown Nanaimo nightclub at about 2 a.m. on the holiday Monday.

Given there was no reason for her to disappear, that she had no history of running away and that everyone she knew said she was a reliable person, police could reach no other conclusion, said Const. Jack Eubank, spokesman for the Nanaimo RCMP.

Everything else has come up negative, he said. We've just run out of options.

Investigators met with Young's parents, Don and Joanne Young, Tuesday afternoon, to inform them of their grim opinion.

The Youngs have asked for privacy. The family was not available for comment.

One of the 40 tips, which serious crime investigators continue to examine, is that Young was last seen in a red or burgundy-coloured Jaguar outside The Jungle Cabaret at closing time.

Eubank said police have spoken with the owner of that vehicle, but Eubank said they still need details on its movements.

Anyone who saw a burgundy 1980s Jaguar in Nanaimo the night of June 30 or on the morning of July 1 is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

Concerns about Lisa were first raised by the Youngs, who called police at 11:30 a.m. July 1.

They became worried because Lisa was to move with the help of her father that day.

Missing city woman always called home

The urgency increased July 2 because that is when Lisa was to begin a new job and still no one had heard from her. The Youngs told the Daily News July 3 Lisa always called if she would be away for any length of time.

Young worked at a number of Nanaimo bars, and was also known to be a patron of local bars.

Paul Manhas, who owns three downtown bars where Lisa worked, including The Jungle, suspects she left the club with the wrong people. He said she stopped working at The Jungle about three months ago, but continued being a patron.

She was a very nice girl, very quiet, Manhas told the Daily News. She must have got in the wrong car with the wrong people.

He said he last saw her briefly June 27, and there was no indication then of anything wrong.

Anyone with information about Young's disappearance can call police at 754-2345. Information may be passed on anonymously, and for a potential reward, to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
