PHINNEY, Paul Hudson October 22, 1968 - March 28, 2016 Paul Hudson Phinney, 47, died Monday, March 28, after a long struggle with mental illness and depression. He is survived by his loving parents, Carole and Peter Phinney on Gabriola; his sister and brother-in-law Christiana and Ryan Jones; and his nephews Logan and Hudson; nieces Eva and Autumn (in Cleveland, Ohio); his Aunt Barbara Tarris (Jeff) on South Pender Island; Aunt Vee Innes on Salt Spring Island; and Uncle Larry Phinney (LaVerne) in Stony Plain, Alberta. Paul was born October 22, 1968 in Vancouver, BC. He attended Lonsdale and Brooksbank Elementary Schools and Sutherland Secondary School in North Vancouver. He graduated from BCIT as a certified plumber and gas fitter at the age of 22. He devoted many years as a plumber in the Vancouver area and on Gabriola Island. He was an avid scuba diver and travelled to Mexico to dive in the caves. He loved music, movies, photography, and animals. He was often seen walking his dog Marley (named after Bob Marley) in the Village. Most importantly, he was a kind-hearted and generous man. Thank you to all who helped Paul through his difficult days. Thank you also to RCMP Cpl. Markus Müntener, the first responder, Dr. Francois Bosman, and the ambulance crew who attended to Paul. Please honour Paul and continue discussing mental illness to bring it out of the shadows so that, perhaps, one day future individuals and families do not experience the same heartache. If you are able, consider donating to the Canadian Mental Health Association, B.C. Division at www.cmha.bc.ca Above all, if you ever feel like your only option is to harm yourself, please speak with a loved one or call a suicide hotline (Crisis Intervention & Suicide Prevention Centre of BC 1-800-310-6789) because you are precious and loved just the way you are. Just like Paul was. And that is how we will remember him. A Celebration of Life was held Saturday, April 30 at 1pm at the Fellowship Church on Gabriola Island.
