Family will hold vigil for missing Nanaimo woman
The family of a young Nanaimo woman missing for seven years will hold a candlelight vigil in her memory for the first time on the West Coast this weekend.
Even though Lisa Marie Young was born and raised in Nanaimo, her mother, Joanne Young, said the family is holding their annual vigil for her on Long Beach this year because much of her extended family lives there.
This is the first year in a few Joanne Young said she's felt emotionally strong enough to have a vigil.
"We just want to keep the awareness out there that she is still missing," Joanne Young said. "We've always believed that someone knows something."
In the early hours of June 30, 2002*, then 21-year-old Lisa Marie Young was in downtown Nanaimo, out celebrating a friend's birthday, when she got into a maroon Jaguar and was never seen again.
The vigil will take place on Long Beach on Sunday at 1 p.m.
* Several publications misreported dates surrounding Lisa's disappearance (likely confused by the long weekend). Lisa's parents last saw her late Sunday June 30th, and she was last seen by her friends at the bar and at two parties early Monday July 1st (Canada Day), which was also the day she was to move into her new apartment, and when her disappearance was reported to RCMP.
