'Happy birthday, Lisa'
The investigation into the death of Lisa Young may not be active at this time, but it will never close until police determine conclusively what happened to the Nanaimo woman.
Saturday, a service was held in honour of Lisa's birthday, which is May 5. She would be turning 23. Lisa has been missing since June 30, 2002*. While officially she is missing, police believe she met with foul play.
Joanne Young, Lisa's mother, said the event Saturday at the Unity Church in Nanaimo was "awesome."
"We sang Happy Birthday to Lisa and released some balloons," she said.
Local chanteuse Allison Crowe also sang Lisa's Song, a tribute she penned to Lisa Young. A T-shirt bearing Lisa's photo was also worn by a number of people. Anyone interested in buying one of the shirts can reach Joanne Young by email, at ryoung@shaw.ca
She said that near to the end of June they will also have a ceremony to remember Lisa's disappearance.
When on July 1, 2002 she failed to return home, her parents called police.
It was learned Lisa had been to a number of bars* in downtown Nanaimo, that she left in a maroon Jaguar with some other people and was last seen in the Jingle Pot area.
Police would still welcome any new information which would assist in determining what happened to Lisa. Anyone with new information can call 754-2345. Those with any new tips who want to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

*This article incorrectly states "Lisa had been to a number of bars." She had actually attended one bar and two house parties: one on Nanaimo Lakes Road and the other in the Cathers Lake area.
* Several publications misreported dates surrounding Lisa's disappearance (likely confused by the long weekend). Lisa's parents last saw her late Sunday June 30th, and she was last seen by her friends at the bar and at two parties early Monday July 1st (Canada Day), which was also the day she was to move into her new apartment, and when her disappearance was reported to RCMP.
