Tree dedication in memory of Lisa Marie Young and all MMIWG2S+
Tree dedication taking place October 18 on Departure Bay waterfront walkway

Summary

On October 18, the City of Nanaimo, alongside family, friends and supporters of Lisa Marie Young, will dedicate a tree in her memory and in honour of all missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people.

Lisa Marie Young disappeared from the City of Nanaimo on June 30, 2002.* Lisa’s mother, Marlene Joanne Young, fought to keep her daughter's memory alive until her dying days. The family, friends and supporters of Lisa explain that the “fight for justice” in her name continues today.

The dedication is supported by the City of Nanaimo’s Tree Donation Program which began in the spring of 2024.

City staff worked closely with Lisa Marie Young’s family, friends and supporters for the special dedication of a tree as an extension of this program.

The dedication will take place at the north end of the Departure Bay waterfront walkway, starting at 10:30 a.m. RSVP through Facebook here.

* Several publications misreported dates surrounding Lisa's disappearance (likely confused by the long weekend). Lisa's parents last saw her late Sunday June 30th, and she was last seen by her friends at the bar and at two parties early Monday July 1st (Canada Day), which was also the day she was to move into her new apartment, and when her disappearance was reported to RCMP.   (See the timelines.)
