On the evening of June 30th, 2002,[3] Lisa Marie Young was visiting with her parents[4] at their apartment on Barons Road[5] in Nanaimo. Lisa had always been very close with her parents,[6] and she in fact lived with a roommate[7] in the apartment right next door to theirs.[5]
Lisa chatted with her parents while watching TV[8] and sharing a beer with her dad.[1][9] They discussed plans they'd made for the following morning.[5] Lisa had rented a new apartment,[5] and July 1st was moving day,[6] so her dad was going to use his Purolator Courier delivery van[10] to help her move.[11]
Lisa mentioned that it was the birthday of her friend Dallas,[12] and she had plans to meet up with Dallas[13] and several other friends downtown.[2][14]
Lisa's father protested, "Isn't it a little late?"[2][15]
Canada Day long weekend is always busy in downtown Nanaimo.[16] Canada Day festivities align with a parade, a marine festival, dragon boat races, and the Bathtub Race, and in the evening there's a large fireworks display over the Nanaimo Harbour, drawing large crowds eager to celebrate.[17]
Earlier in the day skies were cloudy with drizzle leading up to the 9:30pm sunset, when wind picked up, clearing the sky in time for the fireworks.[18][14]
Lisa left her parents' apartment around 11:00pm.[2] Her mother would later recall a strange silence that fell between husband and wife as Lisa left that night. "We were just quiet at that time. We looked at each other for a second and watched our daughter walk down the hall."[1]
Lisa went home to have a quick bath[2] before getting dressed to go out. She wore all black including a miniskirt, cropped leather jacket and zippered thigh-high leather boots,[19] along with a small black purse and a chain made up of steel hoops,[20] which she wore first as a necklace, later changing it to wear as a belt.[14]
Lisa met up with Dallas and they headed downtown,[21] arriving together at The Jungle around 11:45pm.[22]
