‘It's never too late': Search for Nanaimo's Lisa Marie Young continues 21-years-later
Lisa Marie Young disappeared from her hometown of Nanaimo on June 30th, 2002* at the age of just 21-years-old. She has now been missing just as long as she had lived, prior to her disappearance.
21 years ago, Young was having a night out with friends. She went to a nightclub and two house parties before accepting a ride to a fast food restaurant from a man she had reportedly never met before.
Although her body has never been found, Nanaimo RCMP have been investigating this case as a homicide.
Now, posters still line the streets of Nanaimo displaying Young's picture and calling on anyone with information to come forward and help the Nanaimo RCMP in their investigation.
Police say that even though there has been an uptick in homicide cases in recent years, their Serious Crimes Unit has kept Young's case as a priority.
“Over the years, investigators have received hundreds of tips, have interviewed as many people, conducted numerous searches, and have diligently followed up on old and new information,” said Reserve Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
On Sunday, June 25th, Young's friends, family and members of the community who wanted to stand in solidarity with them gathered outside the Nanaimo RCMP detachment for a vigil.
A song was sung, a prayer was said and some of those in attendance spoke to keep Young in the forefront of their minds as those gathered then marched to the pavilion in Maffeo Sutton Park.
“We want the public to know that this investigation continues to move forward. If you have information that you have never shared with police, now is the time to do so,” said O'Brien.
“It's never too late.”

* Several publications misreported dates surrounding Lisa's disappearance (likely confused by the long weekend). Lisa's parents last saw her late Sunday June 30th, and she was last seen by her friends at the bar and at two parties early Monday July 1st (Canada Day), which was also the day she was to move into her new apartment, and when her disappearance was reported to RCMP.
